Smarticon

Smarticon is a digital platform with web and mobile components,
which hosts the human knowledge validated referable to the Cultural Heritage sector.
The heritage of digital information is made available to humanity
by means of a proprietary method, based on cognitive technologies.

The innovative contents of Smarticon are concentrated in the ability to investigate a work of art (known or unpublished), starting from the identification of the iconographic attributes that characterize it. This process occurs both guided and free and the system is designed to support the user, in a simple, timely and dynamic way, throughout the process.

The integration of the information allows to progressively refine the research, until the system processes the correct identification of the subject depicted in the artefact.

The method transforms the validated cognitive heritage (the precious knowledge profused by the experts which, actually, lacks an ordering) into heritage of digital information (enunciates: ordered information that are able to form reciprocal relationships and correlations). The system is highly usable thanks to the aid of cognitive technologies.

Once the subject depicted in the artifact has been identified, the research continues by recalling all the information related to the artwork: bibliographic references, diagnostic exams and much more.

Smarticon is a harbinger of benefits that involve all the sectors of the ecosystem of Cultural Heritage::

  • museums, sites, institutionswhich own collections, art galleries for the digitalisation and organization of information with an optimization of the artworks for a subsequent fruition by the users
  • experts and art consultants in order to have a centralized instrument of consultation to carry out one’s own research and discoveries on unpublished or re- evaluated artworks
  • judicial authorities in support of their investigations to fight against counterfeiting.

Smarticon is an instrument of “decision support” profused to offer our contribution of innovation to the world of Cultural Heritage: it facilitates the research, provides information and helps to create an evaluation of the artworks in question without ever giving an absolute certification regarding the research in progress. In other words, it does not want to replace human judgment but wants to facilitate and support it with the technology available today.

The Smarticon Patent

Smarticon is an Italian patent for method:

“Method for the classification, cataloging and tracing of valuable assets, in particular works from the world of art”
(Patent number 102015000006508 granted to Sara Penco on October 13th, 2017)

The method arises from a deep passion for art and for all that it represents. 

Smarticon means “intelligent image”, because it allows to investigate the work of art starting from the description of the subject (iconography) and to continue with the recovery of all the information required for the enhancement of the asset and the search for truth.

The project places a hermeneutic order in the cognitive patrimony lavished by the experts in the field of Cultural Heritage and makes it usable thanks to the transformation of historical-iconographic information into heritage of digital information and a cognitive search engine.

The fusion of engineering technologies and the characteristics of the Smarticon method, allow to innovate the contents and processes of both and to create a new synergy, ready to “ride the wave of innovation” to be projected towards a planetary humanism.

  • Dal 1999 al 2005 il “Sistema Penco” (la prima versione dell’attuale metodo Smarticon), è stata oggetto di collaborazione con il già Comandante del “Nucleo Tutela Patrimonio Culturale”: Generale Roberto Conforti
  • Aggiudicazione primo posto L.R. 51/96. Gaz. Uff. Reg. Lazio, n° 25. Gazzetta Ufficiale Regione Lazio, n° 25, del 10 settembre 2001, contenente la Graduatoria di merito (1° posto) per le ammesse a finanziamento L.R. 51/96, per l’imprenditoria femminile.
  • Una versione del “Sistema Penco” (la prima versione dell’attuale metodo Smarticon), è stata fornita all’Arma dei Carabinieri Tutela Patrimonio Culturale per il “Sistema Leonardo”. Tale versione è stata appositamente realizzata per favorire l’identificazione ed il recupero delle opere trafugate (30 Marzo 2005).
  • Accordo Selex Se.Ma. (Gruppo Finmeccanica) per la consulenza e lo sviluppo di tecnologie di sicurezza per la salvaguardia del patrimonio storico artistico (10 Giugno 2009).
  • Ministero per i Beni e le Attività culturali: Lettera di encomio personale del Ministro Francesco Rutelli 
    “…Le esprimo sincero apprezzamento per il sistema di riconoscimento iconografico “Scoprire l’opera d’arte – Sistema Penco” che consente l’archiviazione, lo studio, la ricerca e la diagnostica dei diversi manufatti, attraverso un metodo di indagine assolutamente innovativo.”…“…Il “Sistema Leonardo, nato dai Suoi studi e oggi utilizzato dal Comando Carabinieri Tutela Patrimonio Culturale, è risultato un sistema capace di effettuare ricerche in modo mirato, preciso e veloce, consentendo il rilevamento di manomissioni e contraffazioni eseguite allo scopo di rendere difficilmente rintracciabile il manufatto trafugato.   • Lettera di accredito Filas S.p.A. del 04/10/2013, per l’accredito allo sviluppo del Centro di Eccellenza, quale parte integrante del DTC.
    Il DTC, Distretto Tecnologico per i beni e le attività Culturali del Lazio, nasce da un Accordo di Programma Quadro (APQ) sottoscritto da Regione Lazio, MIUR, MiSE e MiBAC, gestito da Filas, società regionale dedicata al sostegno dei processi di sviluppo ed innovazione del tessuto imprenditoriale del Lazio.
    Scopo principale del Centro di Eccellenza e’ aprire uno spazio di incontro virtuale in cui condividere idee, conoscere nuove opportunità di finanziamento, sviluppare progetti congiunti, promuovere prodotti e servizi innovativi, diffondere nuove conoscenze, fruire di servizi ad alto valore aggiunto, incontrare i massimi esperti del settore.

Conferenze e pubblicazioni nazionali e internazionali

  • Convegno del 5 Maggio 2009. Camera dei Deputati: “Il ruolo della tecnologia nella salvaguardia e valorizzazione del patrimonio storico artistico italiano” (5 Maggio 2009). Introduzione del Senatore Luigi Ramponi (Presidente del CESTUDIS già Comandante Generale della Guardia di Finanza). Con la partecipazione del Ministro per i Beni e le Attività Culturali, On. Sandro Bondi e dell’Arma Carabinieri Tutela Patrimonio Culturale.
    L’iniziativa è stata organizzata con la preziosa collaborazione della SIPBC (Società Italiana per la protezione dei Beni Culturali) e del CESTUDIS (Centro Studi Difesa e Sicurezza), con i patrocini di: Ministero dei Beni e delle Attività Culturali, Regione Lazio, Provincia di Roma, Comune di Roma e con contributo di SELEX (Gruppo Finmeccanica).

  • Il progetto Smarticon è stato presentato all’incoming DIGISILK MALAYSIA: Digital Content for Cultural Heritage and Smart Tourism e Workshop EXPO ARA PACIS “Tecnologie intelligenti per l’interpretazione, la conservazione e la valorizzazione dei Beni Culturali” (28 Luglio 2015).
  • Partecipazione del progetto Smarticon all’Innovation Forum Italo Cinese realizzato per la missione China-Italy Science, technology & Innovation Week 2015 (dal 16 al 20 Novembre 2015) a Pechino, Shanghai, Chengdu e Tianjin. L’evento si inserisce nelle iniziative di collaborazione internazionale tra cluster tecnologici, avviati da Confindustria nell’anno 2014, per favorire un canale di conoscenza, reciproco scambio e cooperazione tra i cluster italiani ed esteri, in linea con le priorità individuate dalla Commissione europea. Gli ambiti prioritari dell’Innovation Forum China-Italy, sono stati definiti incrociando i settori indicati nelle linee guida nazionali di Horizon 2020, quelli del PNR – Programma Nazionale della Ricerca e quelli del XII Piano Quinquennale Cinese.

  • Smarticon ha vinto uno dei due posti disponibili nella graduatoria di merito per il progetto HULBric. La realizzazione del progetto è stata indetta da Lazio Innova, in collaborazione con CNR-ICVBC e dell’UNESCO WHITRAP: “Historical Urban Landascape: Bridging Cultures”. Le imprese candidate sono state selezionate da una commissione formata da CNR ed Università Tor Vergata.

Sapere Project has realized an intelligent platform, which is not limited to the storage of a single physical asset, but also includes in the concept of “Cultural Heritage” the ordering of cognitive heritage, conceived as an autonomous and independent resource.

Smarticon is a digital platform designed to accommodate the ordering of knowledge that comes from the academic world. The cognitive properties of Smarticon enhance the usability of knowledge lavished by the experts, making it accessible to everyonel.

The method allows, thanks to intuitive queries, to trace, compare and correlate as much information as possible that can be traced back to known, but also unpublished, artefacts.

The new information, before going to integrate the enunciates in the heritage of digital information, will have to pass the validation of the experts.

The protection of Cultural Heritage

The traceability of the Good is the most effective deterrent for the fight against crime.

Smarticon allow to offer a strategic contribution to law enforcement divisions, since they make it possible to imprint the encoding of the genetic code of the work of art within the blockchain: this will guarantee a character of transparency on acts and decisions, since the blockchain is based on immutable and shared records, unalterable, unchangeable and immune from corruption.

The blockchain applied to the world of art allows to make everything traceable: the description of the asset, the cognitive heritage inherent to it, the changes of ownership, the exportations, the state of conservation, the restorations, the diagnostic investigations, old and new storages, any loans for shows and exhibitions, publications, appraisals, censuses, etc.
